Weddings, births and funerals could be excluded from any new coronavirus rules, reports claim

Weddings and funerals could receive exemptions from any new coronavirus rules imposed by the Government, it has been reported.

The Prime Minister is set to receive a briefing from top health experts tomorrow, as the spread of the Omicron variant continues.

It has been reported in some national newspapers that any new curbs on the number of people gathering may exclude events including weddings and funerals.

The Government is said to be ‘very cautiously optimistic’ about the effects of the new variant, The Times reported.

Hospitals could also be told to allow women to give birth and attend scans with their partners.

The paper reports that the prospect of new legal restrictions being imposed is less likely than it was last week.

Boris Johnson is set to meet with Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance to discuss the latest data on infections and hospitalisations over the Christmas period.

It is thought that the Prime Minister is eager to study figures on people being admitted to hospital before any further restrictions are imposed in England.

Meanwhile The Telegraph is reporting that schools are preparing to send whole year groups home, with the variant potentially causing mass staff shortages.

Former school staff have been urged to sign up as supply teachers, but officials fear it may not be enough to fill the gap with teachers forced to self isolate.

Following the briefing, the Prime Minister is expected to announce whether he believes new restrictions are needed ahead of New Year’s Eve.

He delayed making a decision last week after a cabinet meeting.

The PM faces two competing arguments, with rebel Tory MPs calling for no more restrictions to be imposed, and conversely Government scientific advisers calling for tougher measures to curb the spread and protect the NHS.

England is the only nation in the UK that has not rolled out new Covid measures on Boxing Day or December 27.
