The new Covid isolation rules that will impact Manchester United and Man City

Both Manchester City and Manchester United could be handed welcoming boosts over the busy Christmas and New Year period thanks to new guidelines over Covid-19 isolation.

United have recently been heavily impacted by a Covid-19 outbreak within the club, forcing their last two Premier League fixtures, against Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion, respectively, to be postponed.

The Reds’ first-team squad has started to return to Carrington this week in a staggered process, with it hoped that Monday’s scheduled Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park will go ahead.

City, meanwhile, have been able to fulfil their most recent fixtures whilst United and others have been forced to press pause on their campaigns.

Government guidelines have always stated that anyone who has recorded a positive test must self-isolate for ten days. However, the isolation period has now been reduced to just seven days provided that those who have tested positive are no longer displaying symptoms and can produce negative lateral flow tests on days six and seven of the isolation period.

Therefore, as long as players of all clubs concerned meet the threshold and specific criteria, they may be able to play some part in fixtures when they’re crammed together, as they will be over the festive period.

As outlined above, United have faced an outbreak in the past week or so, but the worst of it is now understood to be behind the club, meaning they will be looking forward to their upcoming clashes with Newcastle United and Burnley.

City resume their campaign on Boxing Day, welcoming Leicester City to the Etihad Stadium, before locking horns with Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium on Wednesday, December 29.
