Jake Paul and Tyron Woodley show respect after rematch

Nate Diaz’s teammate said the UFC star left the Amalie Arena before Jake Paul’s fight against Tyron Woodley as he was getting “bored”.

Diaz was in attendance at the event in Florida earlier this month which was headlined by Paul’s rematch with Woodley.

The fan favourite was supporting his teammate Chris Avila on the undercard, who outpointed Paul’s sparring partner Anthony Taylor to pick up his first win in boxing.

Diaz – along with UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal – was called out by Paul after he knocked out Woodley for leaving the arena before his fight.

But Diaz’s longtime teammate Jake Shields said they only left before the main event as they were getting “bored”.

“I think Jake Paul is a decent fighter, but we actually didn’t stick around for the fight. I think Nate and the guys were getting bored and wanted to bounce. So we took off before the Jake Paul fight,” he told Helen Yee.

“[Paul] had security guard trying to keep Nate away, I think he probably thought Nate was going to call him out or something, but he has no interest in fighting him.

“He hasn’t really earned that fight yet. Nate’s the star and I think that’s why they put us in the front row, they had his podcast guys behind him, which was a little weird.

“You’d think they would have put their friends in front of us but they put them behind us like they were trying to build a fight, so we didn’t wanna stick around and watch.”

Despite being called out by Paul on several occasions, Diaz played down the internet star’s comments by asking to be friends with him and his brother Logan.

“I’m a real fighter from the real fight game so don’t trip so hard when you see me fellas let’s just be friends it’s good,” he wrote.

Diaz recently had his contract extended by the UFC after turning down a fight with surging welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev.

The UFC star agreed to fight Dustin Poirier next month at UFC 270 with the promotion giving it the green light, but Poirier has since accused of him of rejecting the fight.

And Shields said – despite Poirier’s claims – that Diaz still wants to fight him.

“I know Nate wants that fight. He wants a top-five opponent but I don’t think the UFC wants to give him a top-five opponent,” he continued.

“They’re trying to give him guys that aren’t names because they don’t want him to leave the UFC with a huge win like that

“Hopefully they’ll be able to come to some terms. The fans want it, Nate wants it, Poirier wants it. I think everyone wants to see that fight.”
