Manchester United have leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur as the favourites to sign Christian Eriksen this summer.
It’s been a slow start to the transfer window for United, causing some fans to grow anxious that the massive rebuild that Erik ten Hag needs to helm this summer may not come to fruition. However, MEN Sport understands that the club are not worried about the slow start, with more than 10 weeks of the window remaining, and will stick to their plan.
It’s understood that Ten Hag is targeting at least five new signings before the window closes, with both Frenkie de Jong and Eriksen among the top priorities. The Dutchman got a first-hand view of Eriksen’s quality last season as he trained with Ajax ahead of making his remarkable return to action.
Just a few months on from suffering a cardiac arrest while representing his country at Euro 2020, the Dane signed a short-term deal with Brentford in January and proved he could still mix it with the best. A string of dazzling displays helped ensured the Bees’ Premier League survival and now several clubs are interested in signing Eriksen on a free when his deal expires next week.
Eriksen’s former club Tottenham were seen as the most likely destination. Unlike United, they can offer Champions League football to the 30-year-old next season, he is already a big fan favourite, having spent seven years in North London and they are managed by Antonio Conte, with whom he won Serie A in 2021 at Inter.
However, over the past 24 hours, his odds to join United have been slashed from 2/1 to 1/2 according to the bookmaker Parimatch, with the chances of an Old Trafford switch increasing significantly. Spurs’ odds to sign Eriksen have drifted from 1/2 to 4/1.
A move to either United or Tottenham seems to be Eriksen’s most likely play as the next best-priced teams, Everton and Newcastle, are both at odds of 20/1.
