Gary Neville makes Mason Greenwood prediction despite Man United performance vs Newcastle

Mason Greenwood can become ‘anything’ he wants in football and Manchester United must continue to give him responsibility moving forward.

That’s the verdict from Sky Sports pundit and former United captain, Gary Neville, who reckons the frontman has a higher overall potential than other young guns at Old Trafford.

Greenwood was recalled by Ralf Rangnick in place of Jadon Sancho for United’s starting 11 at Newcastle, though he was hooked at half-time with the Reds trailing 1-0.

Greenwood’s game-time and output has been somewhat restricted since Cristiano Ronaldo re-signed for United and Marcus Rashford recovered from shoulder surgery — but all three started against Newcastle and Rangnick must continue to put his trust in the Bradford-born player, according to Neville.

Neville has also instructed the innovative German to set out the right environment for Greenwood to return to top form.

Neville said: “Greenwood has to play. For me, he’s an exceptional talent. The growth in him is greater than a lot of other young players in the team. He’s got so much to give.

“I think everyone at Man United can see he can be something really special. Get his head right, keep him fit, keep him consistent, keep the senior players around him to keep him on track – and you’ve got someone there who can anything he wants to be in football.

“He’s a goal [in him] all the time and, at this moment in time, more than Sancho.”

Edinson Cavani’s second half strike ensured United got a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park, following Allain Saint-Maximin’s early goal.
