Ex-Man United star Diego Forlan rolls back the years after scoring directly from a corner

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan proved that he still knows where the back of the net is after scoring directly from a corner on his debut for University League side Old Boys. Forlan approached the corner as if he was about to loft the ball into the box for his teammates to attack, however, he proceeded to whip in a devastating in-swinging cross into the far corner of the goal.

At the height of his career Forlan was accustomed to playing at venues such as Old Trafford and the San Siro, but his spectacular goal was seen by a handful of supporters. Which perhaps explains why the former Uruguay star opted not to celebrate after seeing his spectacular strike hit the back of the net.

Forlan simply strode towards the halfway line as the limited fans in attendance and fellow players watched in awe. However, he did acknowledge the quality of his wonder-goal with a wry smile to the person who filmed it.

Despite an impressive record at Atletico Madrid and for Uruguay, Forlan failed to make much of an impact during his spell at United. In his two-and-a-half seasons at Old Trafford he scored 17 goals in 97 appearances after struggling with the rigours of the English game following his move from Argentinian side Independiente.

Forlan’s opportunities at United were also impacted by the looming shadow of club legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy. And Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that the Dutchman’s unrelenting desire to be the top striker at the Theatre of Dreams was one of the primary reasons Forlan struggled to succeed in Manchester.

“Ruud wanted to be the number one finisher, that was his nature,” said Ferguson. “Diego Forlan didn’t register on his radar at all, so when you put the two of them out there, there was zero chemistry.

“Diego was better with a partner. But he scored some priceless goals. He was a good player and a terrific pro.”
